Thanksgiving leftovers and holiday parties loaded with sweat treats and rich deserts can enlarge the fat cells and slow the metabolism.  Not a good combination when seeking to live a healthier lifestyle in the midst of a borage of tantalizing holiday food temptations.  Not to mention that the holidays tend to knock us out of our normal daily routines of proper exercise and nutrition. 

The average person gains approximately 1 pound between Thanksgiving and New Year’s according to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine and this weight is not lost in the coming year. Although the gain is much less than what most people think, imagine the accumulation over time! Here are some tips to help you maintain – not – gain during the holiday season while still enjoying your family and friends and all that the holidays mean to you.
Have a healthy snack before leaving for a party …If you are concerned that you may overeat at a gathering, eat a healthy snack such as a salad, fruit, or soup before you leave. You will feel satisfied and will be less likely to overindulge.

Eat some healthy options first … Eating some of the healthier foods that are offered first will again decrease the likelihood of you over indulging on some of the more calorie-dense selections. Go back and choose your favorite options afterward.  

Take family walks … Chat and view the holiday decorations in the neighborhood.

Instead of skipping your workout, shorten it… When you don’t have enough time to get in 30 minutes or more exercise then try squeezing in 10 minutes at a high intensity level.  Guys who did four to six go-for-broke 30-second sprints on a bike got the same gains in muscle fitness as those who went for 90 to 120 minutes at a moderate pace. In a different study, the same type of sprints improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, meaning it decreased their risk for unhealthy blood sugar and, eventually, diabetes. Total calorie burn was a puny 250, so you’ll still need longer workouts if you’re looking to torch fat. But for your health, short, fast intervals will get you somewhere, and is far better than skipping altogether.

Coppell, TX Personal Trainer Healthy Recipe of the week

Cracked Pepper Steak (Serves 2)
1 tablespoon cracked black pepper
½ teaspoon dried rosemary
2 beef tenderloins, 1” thick (4-6 ounces each)
1 tablespoon Smart Balance Spread
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
¼ cup brandy or dry red wine

Combine the pepper and the rosemary in a large bowl.  Coat both sides of the steak with the mixture.

Heat the Smart Beat and oil in a skillet until hot.  Add the steaks and cook over medium to medium-high heat for 5-7 minutes or until a thermometer inserted in the center registers 160 degrees F (for medium).

Remove the steaks from the skillet and cover to keep them warm.

Add the brandy to the skillet and bring to a boil over high heat, scraping particles from the bottom of the skillet.  Boil for about 1 minutes or until the liquid is reduced by half.  Spoon the sauce over the steaks.

Protein: 24 gm
Total Carb: 3 gm
Fiber: 1 gm
Fat 21 gm
Saturated Fat: 6 gm

 Complete it: serve with new potatoes (or herb roasted potatoes) and seared green beans or asparagus for a complete meal.

Dallas Boot Camp and Coppell Boot Camp – Personal Trainer Tip of the Week

Video Tip of the Week with personal trainer David Yarbrough- David is a lead personal trainer in the Get You In Shape Boot Camp.

Are you ready for the next trend in healthy eating?  Having nothing to do with counting total calories or fat, this trend has you counting total ingredients…except that we’re putting ingredients on the short list…literally that is.  In order for a food to be classified as a “clean food” it has to contain five or less ingredients.   Amanda Carlson M.S., R.D., the director of performance nutrition and research for Athletes’ Performance, says “the move to clean foods will be the biggest food trend in the next 12 to 18 months.” It’s really not fair to call this a “diet” or a “fad” because it’s just good healthy eating.

It is eating the way nature intended. You eat the foods your body is designed to function best on, and that makes you feel – and look – fantastic. When you eat clean, you eat more often. You will eat lean protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats. These practices keep your blood-sugar levels stable and keep you satisfied. The best part is that if you need to lose weight it will happen almost without you having to try. And yes, you can have a treat now and again!

So I’ve got a challenge for you boot campers!  Aside from your meal replacement protein shakes, for the next 30 days don’t put anything in your mouth that has more than 5 ingredients in it.  Or maybe, if that’s too “high intensity” of a challenge, just try snacking on foods that contain 5 or less ingredients. 

To help you better digest what’s happening and also avoid the hidden pitfalls of mildly deceptive products, here are the menu rules for the challenge:

• Try to eat and drink only those things that contain five or fewer ingredients.
• Try to make sure that each of the ingredients is natural and recognizable. (In other words, no monoglucobenzesorblahtal!)
• Try to buy organic and local when possible.
• For prepared foods such as soups, chilies and casseroles, it’ll be okay to have more than five total ingredients. So a 15-vegetable soup or an 8-bean chili is fine, as long as each item that goes into it has five ingredients or less.
• Do your best to abide by these guidelines without beating yourself up or becoming a social outcast. That way, even if you waver at a family gathering or fall tailgate, you won’t feel like you’ve failed and let it derail your nutrition habits.

Eating clean can be a major transition for a majority of people due to addictions to sugar, white bread, and fast food. It takes discipline in order to make eating clean a habit but it is possible and has many long-term health benefits.

Some of the health benefits are:

 Eating Clean keeps you feeling great and full of energy. In fact, you can forget all about the days when “dieting” meant feelings of hunger, lethargy or deprivation.

Eating Clean is not a fad; it’s a way of life. When you eat clean your body will react by losing weight if you need to lose, maintaining a healthy weight if that’s where you are, and even gaining weight if you are too skinny. But regardless of whether you want to lose, maintain or gain, you will feel better than you ever have before.

There is no fitness goal which you can achieve without first cleaning up your diet.  Changing your diet is one of the biggest challenges when faced with improving one’s health.  A majority of people are used to eating highly processed foods on a regular basis and breaking away from that can be difficult.  The good news is, it isn’t impossible and once you make it a habit to eat clean, it becomes a part of your life.

Understanding Calories

Each pound of fat your body stores represents 3,500 calories of unused energy. In order to lose one pound of fat, you either have to burn 3,500 calories or eat 3,500 calories less or over a period of time. You probably have heard the phrase calories in–calories out. This simply means to lose body fat the calories you consume need to be less than the calories your body burns. The best and healthiest option is to do a combination of both approaches, minimize your caloric intake while burning off excess calories. There is a difference in the nutritional value of calories and that should be also noted. Your body needs nutrients in order to go about its daily activities. There is a difference in the type of calories you are putting in you body. You can eat 1,800 calories of all cookies in one day, which may be below your daily calories but you body will not be able to get all the nutrients it needs with the calories from the cookies.

The first step is to determine how many calories you need to eat daily to maintain your current weight. There are many websites that you can google “daily caloric needs” and determin your daily caloried needs. Each person will vary depending on gender, weight, height and level of daily physical activity (a sedentary occupation vs. and active occupation). This site will give you an idea on how many calories per day that your body needs to maintain your current weight. An easy way to start the process of losing body fat and weight is by only cutting that number by 500 each day. Cut the calories you consume by 300 a day and also exercising an extra 200 to make 500 a day. By doing this, you will be burning 3,500 calories a week or one pound of body fat per week. It is recommended that no more than 2 pounds or 7,000 calories be lost per week for lasting weight loss.

Ways to help count and cut calories are:

1. Have a daily journal and begin writing down everything you eat and add up the calories. This will help in knowing how much you ate and it can also act as an accountability partner. Write down what you ate, the amount of calories consumed, and write down the time you ate. There are also many websites will help you find out how many calories are in the foods you are eating.
2. Start looking at the labels of the foods and drinks you are consuming to be aware of the calories.
3. Cut down on empty calories in drinks such as soda, juice, alcohol, specialized coffee drinks and sweetened teas are all in the high calorie/low nutrition. There are ZERO calories in Water!!
4. Cut down or limit all unrefined sugars that are found in foods such as cookies, cake, ice cream, candy and candy bars. Also cut out high caloric fried foods such as potato chips, onion rings, French fries, donuts, and other fried foods.
5. Start cutting your portions so that you are eating fewer calories each time you eat.
6. When eating out, always split a meal with someone or have the waiter put the rest of the plate in a to-go box before your meal comes out.

It is important to note that there are some people out there that do not get enough calories. A diet that is too low in calories doesn’t provide the body with the nourishment and adequate nutrients it needs to perform activities of daily living. If your body does not get enough calories it will begin to start feeding off your muscle and using protein as fuel instead of carbohydrates and fat. Drastically reducing calories is not an effective way to lose body fat because instead of losing fat, you lose muscle. Whether or not you’re trying to lose weight, always strive to eat balanced meals and snacks that provide enough calories to keep you energized.
