Dallas area Personal Trainer and Boot Camp Weight Loss and Fitness Tip of the Week – Choices: Living a Healthy Life is a ChoiceDo you ever do something “just out of habit?” For example, when you’re thirsty, do you grab a coke or some other sugary drink “out of habit?” Or when you want a snack, do you grab a handful of chips or a cookie, “out of habit?” Habits form because of the choices we make. If we consistently make bad choices concerning our health, whether done consciously or subconsciously, they can sabotage our ability to live a healthy life.

Think about it… everything you do, every single moment, you have a choice. Sometimes there are big choices in life, such as, “Should I look for a new job that will make me feel more fulfilled or just stay in my current job where I feel secure yet unchallenged?” Other times there are very small choices, such as, “Should I read the paper or catch up on email?” Regardless of the moment, the choices you make throughout your day and life build on each other and define who you are.

Someone much wiser than me once said, “There are always two choices. Two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it’s easy.”

Taking the path that is harder on you emotionally, mentally, or physically will more times than not reap much bigger rewards than the easy path. Regularly making those tough choices is the only way you can change bad habits into good habits and is essential for living a healthy life. Although this may be a frustrating and daunting task, the good news is that it is all within your control. Remember, when it comes to your health, nobody but you can completely know what to choose.

When you started the GetYouInShape program, you received a copy of “Lifestyle Habits to Change.” This would have either been on at the Coppell or Dallas Boot Camp Orientation or in your first few emails. Whether you have just started the program or whether you have been doing it for some time, go back to that document and review it to see if you can improve any of your habits. It contains a number of lifestyle habits that if you have them, you will have a better chance of reaching your overall goal and increases your ability to maintain your goal tenfold.

Start small. Pick one or two habits to work on and determine what choices you will be confronted by with your current habits and then decide what positive, healthy choices you will need to make in order to change your behavior and ultimately create new healthy habits.

I recognize that turning everyday choices into healthy habits isn’t done overnight. So make sure you have defined what success means for you — big and small. Consider what it means to be successful, this minute, this hour, and this day. Then recognize your moments of success. Resisted candy – success! Did cardio for 30 minutes – success! Drink water instead of Coke this week – success! Every time you make the right choice, it leads to another success and nothing breeds more success than success.

Coppell Fitness Boot Camp Gives Free ‘Turkey-Busting Workouts’ November 25-28 To Help Feed The Hungry.

COPPELL, TEXAS – November 12 – Just bring a can of food or an old coat and you can workout at Coppell’s leading fitness boot camp from November 25-28 for free. Linder, owner of Get You In Shape Coppell Boot Camp, calls them “Turkey-Busting Workouts” because they burn off those monstrous calories we all consume on Thanksgiving.

“We’re planning on making this an annual tradition here,” says Linder, “because Thanksgiving is such a wonderful family and friends holiday, and a time to show our appreciation for all we have, especially our health.”

The Coppell Boot Camp is open to all Coppell Area residents and their family and friends on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The cost of admission is just one can of food (preferably vegetables) or an old coat; otherwise it’s completely free to everyone who wants a great workout with fun people.

“All that we ask is that folks register in advance at www.CoppellThanksgivingWorkout.com so we can be sure we have enough equipment on hand to accommodate everyone,” says Linder. “Boot camp is perfect for all folks regardless of age or fitness level – we make everyone feel welcome and customize the workouts so everybody gets what they need.”

The Get You In Shape Coppell Boot camp Turkey-Busting Workouts will be held at Andy Brown Park East in Coppell.

“We anticipate a great turnout because folks enjoy working out with family, friends and friendly people. And because we’re supporting a great cause, CCA which distributes more than $1.4 of food each year to people in need. It’s a great way for us to give thanks for our health, our families, friends and good fortune, and help others who are less fortunate at the same time,” explains Linder.

Are you ready for the next trend in healthy eating? Having nothing to do with counting total calories or fat, this trend has you counting total ingredients…except that we’re putting ingredients on the short list…literally that is. In order for a food to be classified as a “clean food” it has to contain five or less ingredients. Amanda Carlson M.S., R.D., the director of performance nutrition and research for Athletes’ Performance, says “the move to clean foods will be the biggest food trend in the next 12 to 18 months.” It’s really not fair to call this a “diet” or a “fad” because it’s just good healthy eating.

It is eating the way nature intended. You eat the foods your body is designed to function best on, and that makes you feel – and look – fantastic. When you eat clean, you eat more often. You will eat lean protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats. These practices keep your blood-sugar levels stable and keep you satisfied. The best part is that if you need to lose weight it will happen almost without you having to try. And yes, you can have a treat now and again!

So I’ve got a challenge for you boot campers! Aside from your meal replacement protein shakes, for the next 30 days don’t put anything in your mouth that has more than 5 ingredients in it. Or maybe, if that’s too “high intensity” of a challenge, just try snacking on foods that contain 5 or less ingredients.

To help you better digest what’s happening and also avoid the hidden pitfalls of mildly deceptive products, here are the menu rules for the challenge:

Try to eat and drink only those things that contain five or fewer ingredients.
Try to make sure that each of the ingredients is natural and recognizable. (In other words, no monoglucobenzesorblahtal!)
Try to buy organic and local when possible.
For prepared foods such as soups, chilies and casseroles, it’ll be okay to have more than five total ingredients. So a 15-vegetable soup or an 8-bean chili is fine, as long as each item that goes into it has five ingredients or less.
Do your best to abide by these guidelines without beating yourself up or becoming a social outcast. That way, even if you waver at a family gathering or fall tailgate, you won’t feel like you’ve failed and let it derail your nutrition habits.

Eating clean can be a major transition for a majority of people due to addictions to sugar, white bread, and fast food. It takes discipline in order to make eating clean a habit but it is possible and has many long-term health benefits.

Eating Clean keeps you feeling great and full of energy. In fact, you can forget all about the days when “dieting” meant feelings of hunger, lethargy or deprivation.

Eating Clean is not a fad; it’s a way of life. When you eat clean your body will react by losing weight if you need to lose, maintaining a healthy weight if that’s where you are, and even gaining weight if you are too skinny. But regardless of whether you want to lose, maintain or gain, you will feel better than you ever have before.

There is no fitness goal which you can achieve without first cleaning up your diet. Changing your diet is one of the biggest challenges when faced with improving one’s health. A majority of people are used to eating highly processed foods on a regular basis and breaking away from that can be difficult. The good news is, it isn’t impossible and once you make it a habit to eat clean, it becomes a part of your life.
